The Passport is an essential travel document that you need to carry when visiting places outside your country. If you are an American citizen and do not have a passport yet, you can make use of the following information about applying for US passport.

Getting your US passport is fairly simple if you know the necessary steps involved.  You can start by filing your application online. You can also get your passport application from a nearby US post office or download it from the internet. You will need passport sized photos, so keep that ready too. You should be at least 14 years old to be eligible to apply for a passport on your own. If you are younger, both your parents should sign on the passport application and either give a notarized consent or appear in person while filing the application.

Papers you need while applying for US passport: - Your old passport, if you have any; Passport application form DS-11; Proof of American nationality – this can either be your old US passport, your US birth certificate or your naturalization certificate; Form DS-64 - if you lost your passport; Form DS-3053; Two passport sized photos; a statement of consent from parents for applicants under 14; and an identity proof – this can be your military ID, driving license, old passport or Government ID. In case you had a name-change, you should have the name-change document issued to you by court, or you can use your official marriage documents. Also, remember to note down your Social Security number, you will need it when filing your passport application.

If you already have a passport, and if you want to renew it from outside US, you can visit the nearest US embassy and use the American Citizen Services at the consulate. You can fill out your application form, but you should not sign on it until you are told to do so by the executive who is receiving the application.

Once the passport application process is over, you can get the passport from the nearest passport office at your locality. You can submit the departure date and expect to get the passport in around 15 to 60 days.

If you ever lose your passport, see that you immediately report to your local police station and to the US consulate. Also, you cannot use the passport you have reported as lost, even if you find it later.

Check the fees you have to pay for the application and the payment options that are accepted. Currently the passport fee is $100 for applicants who are 16 and older and the passport you get in this case will be valid for ten years. Passport applicants under 16 will have to pay a fee of $85 which gets a US passport that is valid for five years. If you are facing a time shortage, you can rush the passport application process by paying an additional fee of $60 and the overnight delivery fees, and you may even get the passport on the very same day you applied for it.
