The US is one of the most popular work destinations for skilled people from around the world. If you are a person looking to get into US for your career’s sake, then you will have to get an authorization called the USA work permit. Getting this permit can be very confusing and complicated especially to people who are new to working abroad. Such people need to do some research on the various types of US work visas and the steps to be followed in getting their permit.

The following are the different types of US work permits:

H1B Visa - This is the primary US Work Visa for students and people in specific professions from any where in the world including USA. To get a H1B Visa, you will need to have a minimum bachelor’s degree or combination of supplementary educations like diploma, and at least 12 years work experience in your profession. This visa can also be used for applying for Green Card and is transferable with the employer. Some examples of professionals who can get H1B visa are: IT professionals, Doctors, Engineers, Business analysts, Lawyers, professors etc.

Some of the documents that a H1B visa applicant will be required to present are: The Degree certificate, Diploma certificate, References to verify Employment, Updated Resume, and other such documents. If you are married and want to take your spouse along with you, then you will be required to submit your spouse’s passport, Visa, Marriage certificate, H1B approval notice and a letter from your current employer.

H2B Visa - This visa is a temporary one that you can use for any short term work that you have to complete in the US. There is no need of a basic degree, although you need to have a H2B job offer from an US company fully meeting the criteria of the employer. Examples of such temporary jobs are those in maintenance, construction, hotels, resorts, stores etc.

TN1 Visa - is almost like the H1B visa but it is only for citizens of Mexico and Canada.

E3 Visa - This visa is comparable to H1B, although you need to be an Australian citizen to get one.

E2 Investors/Business Visa - This visa is for those interested in doing business in US.

Green card - This is none other than the permanent residency visa which can give you unrestricted time for staying in US and can also help you get US Citizenship

J1 Training/work visa - a small term visa that allows you to get short term training in the US on certain skills and then leave to apply those skills in your country.

L1 Visa - is for senior workers who are employed in companies outside US but want to get relocated to the same employer inside the US. The lone requirement for getting this visa is that you should be employed in any of the branches of a company that already has the L1 visa. However, the validity has a limit of seven years and the members of your family will need to have a L2 visa if they want to go with you.
